Sand
Point is located on Popof Island off the
Alaskan peninsula and is part of the Aleutians East Borough. The most common
way to visit Sand Point is by
commercial airline with daily flights to and from
Anchorage and, during the summer months, the ferry M/V Tustumena stops in
Sand Point.
Sand Point is home to over 900 full-time residents. Our school offers a
full-sized indoor swimming pool, open gym times and a library with a media center that offers free internet access. The citizens of Sand Point are protected by a police force, volunteer fire and emergency
medical personnel as well as a full service medical clinic. Sand Point has a
grocery store, a toy store, hardware center and several restaurants. The island has a rich tradition of Christian work that is carried on by our local congregations.
Sand Point's multi-use trail system
allows hikers and bikers excellent
opportunities to view wildlife and breathtaking scenery. The island is
home to a herd of buffalo, bald eagles, puffins and numerous
other species of bird.
Migrating whales visit in the summer and sea lions, otters and seals are
often seen in the harbor or on one of Sand Point's beaches.
The climate is best described as maritime with a recorded temperature range
from -9° F to 76°. Sand Point has mild winters with an average annual snowfall
of 52 inches. The longest day of the year sees 17 hours, 27 minutes of
daylight while the shortest day sees 7 hours, 6 minutes.
